Sumner’s Tane Cambridge – winner of the Hanmer Four Square Half Marathon for 2012
Saturday 5 May was once again, the much anticipated event on Sumner’s social calendar – the Hanmer Half Marathon and 10km events, with race central being the Hanmer Forest Camp Lodge where most of our families had elected to base themselves for the weekend’s happenings. We had 30 runners taking part, slightly up on last year.
Half Marathon
Tane Cambridge, Bernie Calder, Grant Guise, Ian Withington, Lisa Brignull, Annette Campbell, George Richardson, Susie Marsh, Nathan Smith
10km
Lockie Campbell, Josh Campbell, Ian Harrison, Felix Harrison, Jan Harrison, Sophie Harrison, William Richardson, Morgan Strong, Bee Ruder, Ryan Batin, Rebecca Batin, Sia Svendsen, Russ Taylor, Marc Lidiard, Louis Harris, Graham Harris, Ella Harris, Ed Cory-Wright, Al Cory-Wright, Jean Cory-Wright, Katie Cory-Wright, Kerri Batin
It was also great to see former Sumnerite turned supporter Penny Shaw running the 10km, after having given birth to daughter Summer during the latter part of 2011.
Unfortunately, I’m not able to comment on any impromptu entertainment that may have taken place at the Lodge on the Friday evening given we only travelled up on race morning, so that will have to be left to your imagination.
Race morning was superb. Overcast conditions and patchy fog just out of Christchurch had cleared to a brilliant day upon reaching Hanmer.
Graham Frith, Race Director, made the comment that if the race hadn’t attracted a record number of entries, it was very close to it. Whether this meant additional competition at the pointy end was yet to be seen.
In the Half Marathon, the more obvious competition for our race favourite (Tane Cambridge) came in the form of Christchurch runner Vajin Armstrong (who incidentally was back in Christchurch by Sunday morning to act as Race Director for the Athletics New Zealand 100km Champs which Marty Lukes was competing in). However, Tane made his intentions very clear within the first kilometre or so, clearing out from the field very quickly. For those who are interested, here is some unedited footage of the start of the Half Marathon, taken up the Clarence Valley Road:

As in previous years, the 10km race started 15 minutes after the Half, and in this distance we had a number of hopefuls looking to repeat previous wins or step up a place or two.

The barometer for me in terms of pace is how quickly I can get to the 10km/Half Marathon turn-off before the leaders in the Half come through. Last year I arrived just as the front runners were coming out of McIntyre Road and turning left to continue on in the longer distance. This year, Tane had been, gone and was out of sight – he was on fire!
At that early stage of the race, there were some good signs – Lisa was second woman in the Half, Ryan was leading the 10km overall with Josh not far behind, and Al was looking comfortable in first place in the Vet category. This year, Ella was playing catch up in the 10km, rather than rabbit, and was sitting in 3rd place for the women in the 10km.
By race end, it became very clear that Sumner had a firm hold of both events in terms of age group and overall placings. The highlight was Tane taking out the overall win in the Half distance, an impressive 1.32 minutes ahead of Vajin Armstrong, and Ryan taking out the grunty 10km in a sub-34 at just 18 years of age. So here is how the podium placings stacked up:
Half Marathon
- Tane Cambridge – 1st overall
- Lisa Brignull – 2nd female overall
- Annette Campbell – 2nd Masters Women (50+)
10km
- Ryan Batin – 1st overall
- Josh Campbell – 3rd male overall (1st Junior Men U18)
- Al Cory-Wright – 1st Veteran Men (40+) (a victory three years running)
- Graham Harris – 3rd Veteran Men (40+)
- Russ Taylor – 3rd Masters Men (50+)
- William Richardson – 3rd Junior Men U18
- Ella Harris – 3rd female overall (2nd Junior Women U18)
- Sia Svendsen – 2nd Open Women
- Kerri Batin – 3rd female, walk category
After taking the time to chill for the afternoon, it was back to the Lodge for a very enjoyable evening together over a shared meal, with entertainment provided by Harry Strong (aged 18 months).
Congratulations to everyone who ran or walked at the weekend. It was another awesome Club outing, and our sincere thanks to Annette for once again co-ordinating another very successful occasion.
See you in Hanmer in May 2013.
