All welcome!
Sumner Running Club has a full programme of junior athletes. There are regular meets track and field meets through the summer where kids will get to compete and improve their personal bests.
Our aim is to provide a safe, fun, and friendly environment for your child to develop their athletic potential. Our philosophy focuses on individual improvement and diversity of experience. At this age we strongly believe it is too early for the athletes to specialise, but it’s the right time to build habits of continual improving their personal bests. Training and competing in many events will improve their overall strength and co-ordination and may even reveal a hidden talent!
The lifelong benefits which come from involvement in athletics can start here and we hope your children enjoy the challenges and achievements they will encounter.

Events
The current Athletics Canterbury calendar of events for 2025 includes Sumner Running Club events, along with Athlestics Canterbury and Athletics New Zealand events we participate in.
Interclub Days
Interclub events are held on Saturdays through the summer at the Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub. Interclub events offer junior athletes aged 7 to 14 a fantastic opportunity to test their skills, gain valuable competition experience, and have a great time!
Each week, registered athletes can compete in up to four events plus a relay, making Saturdays an exciting and action-packed morning.
Children must be a registered member of an athletics club affiliated to Athletics Canterbury to be eligible to compete at these events. We fully encourage all our junior athletes to give Interclub competitions a crack. Not only are they a fun and social experience, but they also provide an excellent chance to further develop athletic skills and confidence in a supportive environment.
Competitions are normally held at Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub in Christchurch.
8:30am to 12:30pm Saturdays
The season runs from mid October through to the beginning of March. Dates for summer 2025/26 to be announced.
Colgate Games
The Colgate Games is an amazing event for young
athletes aged 7-14 that has held annually every January for almost 50 years. There are separate North Island and South island events.
The location of the games alternates between the main athletics centres each year. The 2026 South Island Colgate Games will be held in Nelson.
Equipment
We aim to keep equipment simple and affordable so every kid can have a go at athletics.
Uniform
The minimal requirement is a $30 running singlet.

Shoes
We encourage kids to start out with any suitable track or cross country shoes to begin with. We have some secondhand spare shoes available for kids to try before investing in specialised equipment.
