If you are looking for a running club with variety the Sumner Running Club might just be for you. The club is made up of members who love to participate in many forms of running. You’ll find road runners, cross country exponents, track & field athletes, trail runners, multisporters, orienteers, rogainers, adventure racers, and ultra distance wilderness junkies. The Sumner Running Club is proudly Christchurch’s only adventure focused Running Club.
Being a member of a registered club, you get to compete in an excellent winter programme of cross country and road races. Races are up to 10 km against the best competition in New Zealand. Guaranteed to improve your running when you head back to those multisport and endurance events.
With a proud and rich history, Sumner is a competitively social club with a superb junior section if you have children. Annual registration starts in April and runs through to the end of March the following year. The club has the lowest fees in Canterbury and is great value when considering the number of races, club networking and opportunity to learn or share knowledge with a great bunch of people.
And you don’t have to live in Sumner. Members live all around Christchurch and further afield.
Joining our Club and becoming an Athletics New Zealand registered runner
Once you are registered with our Club, you can compete in any of the races on the winter programme and you are eligible for selection for Canterbury to compete at National Championships should your performances warrant it.
The Sumner Club prides itself on endeavouring to keep registration fees as low as possible as we believe cost should not be a barrier to running. To this end, the club runs the Boulder Bay Classic each November as a fundraiser to help subsidize club membership fees and support members achieving representative honours. Club members are needed to help run this event.
Your registration fee includes:
- Fees to Athletics Canterbury and Athletics New Zealand
- Race fees for all ‘Club of the Year’ races
- Access to club facilities and support on race days
- Participation in club events / training weekends
- Registration for summer track and field events (adults only – children have a separate summer registration)
- Weekly training opportunities (at least 3)
- Participation in the club’s social events
Social Membership
If an adult does not want to race in the race programme but would like to be part of the club, they can join as a social runner.
