CLUB ENTRIES ARE CLOSED: ON THE DAY ENTRIES AVAILABLE
The road season is kicking off with the Canterbury Road Champs hosted by Athletics Canterbury. The race has headed back to Landfill Road for 2022. The laps will either be 1km, 2km or, in the case of the men’s race 2.5km. The course is fully certified. It is a flat road course, so an ideal speed course.
This Championship event offers registered athletic club runners and affiliated clubs in the region the opportunity to be selected to represent Canterbury in National Road Championships. While the race is open to all competitors, those wishing to be considered for selection must be an Athletics NZ registered member.
Set in a beautiful lake environment, this is a great course over a range of terrains. While predominately tar seal & gravel roads there are grassy tracks in places.
The course has a few undulations, but overall considered to be very fast and runnable for all runners. Road shoes are recommended.
This year a new grade is being introduced which the organisers are very excited about. Developed to allow Whanau to run together, teams in this grade must have at least 1 adult and 1 child (U16). The rest is flexible.
Team options Adults (16+), under 16 and Whanau team.
Entries will close at 9am on Monday, 01 August.
MW: Annette, Jin, Helen, Robyn
MM: Danny, TBC, TBC, Marty
Under 16: Nicola/Emily/Abigail J/Millie (reserve Hari)
Please remember that teams and running order can be adjusted before race start on the day. For the MM and MW this needs to be done by 12pm and by 2.00pm for the under 16 Team
Please note due to the recent wet weather, there is flooding and large pot holes on the access road to the course. Therefore it is recommend that runners park in Lakeside Place or Outlook Place (off Greywacke Road) and walk to the course through the reserve at the end of Lakes Way.
Time for the next XC Team Relays. Seniors, Masters and Under 18

Athletics New Zealand is excited to launch a brand-new NZ Cross Country Relay Championships set to take place on Sunday 31 July of NZ Cross Country weekend.
The Club based cross country relay will feature teams of four with two male and two female racing 2km each around a fast, spectator friendly 1km loop at Spa Thermal Park in Taupō.
With grades for under 16, under 18, under 20, senior, masters 35-49, 50-64, 65+ and composite there are plenty of opportunities to field a team in this exciting inaugural event.
This event would best suit members who may already be in Taupo of the National XC Champs and or a group that would like to have a weekend away in Taupō and dabble in a bit of racing. Further information on the event can be found here
We are conscious timeframes are tight this year considering the location, but if you are potentially interested in this event, please submit an Expression of interest. If there is enough interest we can look at entering a Sumner team(s)
Next up in the XC schedule is the Canterbury XC Champs and Halswell Quarry. This is the pinnacle race for the Cross Country season.
This championship race serves to identify the local champions and also acts as selection race for the National Champs. Junior races kick-off at 1.05pm and Senior racing starts at 2.05pm. See here for event information.
Important Note 1: If you would like to be considered for Canterbury Team selection for the NZ XC Champs in Taupo on 30 July, details on the selection process and nomination form can be found here
Important Note 2: Halswell Quarry is getting busier each year and legal parking will be at a premium. It is recommended that you arrive early and allow time to walk to the start. Where practical, carpooling is a good option
