This expertise, and a new track & field facility – An opportunity too good to miss!

The Sumner Running Club is delighted to announce we have secured the services of an IAAF qualified coach for our junior track and field athletes for the up coming season.  It is great timing, that along with the opening of the new facility at Nga Puna Wai, we have the opportunity to benefit from a very experienced and knowledgeable coach.

Jay Sellathurai has an extensive background in lecturing, administration, and coaching athletics in Sri Lanka, England, and now New Zealand. While he continues his studies doing post graduate research at Canterbury University, he is keen to get involved with the local athletics scene.  He was very enthused when he visited our training grounds in Ferrymead, thinking the setting beautiful, and was excited about coaching there.

In Sri Lanka he has been:

  • Director of Coaching for the Track & Field Coaches Association
  • Chairman (Kids Athletics Development) for the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka
  • Panel member for the national Talent Identification programme
  • Personally coached eight athletes to the World University Games.

He has lectured in many aspects of Sports Science from training methodology to practical skills training. And he is also a qualified Class III Technical Official!

Jay’s has a real passion for sprinting, and the lure of the new track is too much for him to pass up on so he also plans to compete himself.

The club will be very fortunate to have Jay working with our juniors, and providing we have sufficient registrations we look forward to him being a member of the Sumner Running Club community for the next three years.

If you are intending to register this year then you need to go the club website, read the information under the “Junior Track & Field” tab, and then fill out the pre-registration form. https://sumnerrunningclub.org.nz/track-field/
