Schools are on the brink of returning and most summer holidays have now wrapped up, which means a Club update is well overdue. News and happenings have just been picked up through word of mouth, so please let us know if any of our members have been embarking on adventures that have thus far gone under the radar.
Help Please
As part of the lead into the Cashmere Downs 10km, the Cross-Country & Road Committee have organised an extension of the 5km series currently being run by Port Hills in Hagley park on Tuesday evenings. They have asked Sumner to run the event on the 21st of February (any proceeds made will be retained by our Club).
This opportunity is too good to miss as the number of people participating should be fairly high (over 300 people have been turning out so far) and we do not have to worry about traffic management, insurance etc. It is a good way to raise some funds for our Club.
The 3 run series (starting 7th Feb and hosted by Christchurch Avon) will use the same course as the Port Hills series and will comprise of:
- 5.30pm 1.6km fun run for children
- 5.45 pm 5km registered runners event
- 6.15 pm 5km fun run
We need about 15 people to help out; some from 4.30 pm (course set up) but most from 5pm for registration, time keeping etc.
Please let Annette know if you can help – send an email to Annette.campbell@xtra.co.nz.

2012 Winter Programme
The new season’s programme is now available here. The good news is, there is no Athletics Canterbury clash with the Hanmer Half and 10km events this year!
International Track Meet
This is an excellent opportunity to see some of our country’s best in action. Taking place at Christs College from 4pm on 4 February, the meet will feature Nick Willis, Jacko Gill, and Valerie Adams. See the website for further information.
Junior Message from Lockie
We will be resuming training and club nights next week. However I would like to make a change to the Tuesday training night due to the 5km series in Hagley Park which a number of us have been doing and would like to continue with for the next few weeks. The link to the information about these runs is http://www.athletics.org.nz/article.aspx?ID=2616&Mode=1
There is a 5k fun run and a 1.7km children’s run. It is excellent fun and good training, and they sometimes give you a sausage afterwards! The children’s run is free, 5k costs $5. It is well worth coming out and giving it a go. Over 300 runners in the fun run last week with the times ranging from 16 to 35 minutes, so don’t think there will be no-one to run with! Great atmosphere as well and a good chance to measure your fitness. Try to come along.
So I would like to run Tuesday training on Monday instead – for the next few weeks anyway.
Competition for Saturday athletes is on this coming Saturday at Rawhiti Domain - 9.00 am, programme 2.
So coming up we have:
- Saturday 28 January - 9.00 am: Competition at Rawhiti Domain, Programme 2
- Monday 30 January - 5.00-6.30pm: Training at Ferrymead Park for Saturday athletes
- Tuesday 31 January - 5.30pm: Shoe Clinic 5km Series
- Thursday 2 February - 5.00-6.30pm: Club Night at Ferrymead Park
Offroad Series Runner Feedback
Peter Taylor, one of our Offroad Series entrants and recipient of the Croesus Crossing spot prize, kindly gave us the following feedback recently. Great to hear that the prize went to such a good home!
Thanks Sumner Running Club for that wonderful off-road series spot prize of a free entry to the Croesus Crossing. Had a really great time running it last weekend. Much appreciated.

- Karen Muller – Two Day Team (#776)

Member Adventures
This is where the word of mouth really kicks in. It sounds like our people have been making the most of the summer months, and I’m sure this just scratches the surface of what has been happening out there…
- Marty Lukes took to the ranges around Kaikoura and the Nelson Lakes during January, tackling Mt Travers and Mt Tapuaenuku – and conceded that even HE was down on his hands and knees at times while running the latter!
Marty-cam – the sun setting over the main divide
- Sticking safely to the seal, Graham Harris returned to Wanaka for the third year to compete in Challenge Wanaka - the 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42.2km iron distance race. Graham placed third in the 40-49 age group in a time of 10.21 hours (1.18 swim, 5.19 cycle, 3.37 run), taking eight minutes off his previous PB in the process.
- As we speak, new dad Grant Guise is tackling his latest adventure – he is running around Mt Taranaki in an attempt to clock a record. The current record stands at 5 hours 17 minutes (by Greg Barbour), however part of the course no longer exists. Grant has also set up a website which logs “fastest known times” for various routes around New Zealand. Hopefully this will become a well utilised resource by the country’s trail runners: http://fktnewzealand.myfreeforum.org/

- Ella Harris was recently chosen by Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain to play “supporter reporter” for elite athlete Terenzo Bozzone as he prepares to race Ironman New Zealand in March. Last week Ella travelled up to Auckland to meet Terenzo and film a number of video blogs, which are being released via Nutri-Grain’s Facebook page each week until Ironman takes place in March. She will also be travelling to Ironman to report on Bozzone’s race.
- Lisa Brignull’s running wardrobe is set to increase, following her recent selection as Skirt Sports Australia’s New Zealand ambassador. Skirt Sports were impressed by Lisa’s running CV (not to mention how good she always looks in their products!), so she was an obvious choice!
- Two of our up and coming seniors are about to embark on an entirely new phase in their lives – we wish Eugene Campbell and Alistair Richardson all the very best as they prepare to head south to study at Otago University. We’ll certainly miss them from our ranks – both socially and competitively – over the winter season.
- The Cory-Wright family headed south over the New Year period to compete in the Otago Mountainbike Orienteering Carnival, with races taking place in Roxburgh and Alexandra. Al, Jean, Ed and Katie did exceptionally well, with several podium finishes between them. Full details and results can be found here.

- Zac Barber is continuing his triathlon success in the 2011/12 season, with a first place in his grade at the Contact Trophy race which was held out at Pegasus on the 15th of January. He placed 7th overall, which included a number of elite men. In the same Contact event, Ella Harris placed second female overall in the 3:9:3 triathlon, and went on to place second overall in the recent Wanaka Contact 3:9:3 triathlon, with Louis Harris placing first overall in the 1:2:1 triathlon.
