The Frontrunner Offroad Series draws to a close for 2011

Lisa Brignull – Senior Women’s Series Winner

The Sumner Running Club’s annual offroad series has now concluded for 2011.  The third race took place in clear, fine conditions, but a gusty easterly took away from what would otherwise have been a perfect evening.

Numbers were well up on the previous week in the long distance race, but entries in the short distance hadn’t quite bounced back.  It was great to see so many runners returning for the third week in a row, which shows the new Halswell Quarry-based course has been a hit.  Race Director Al Cory-Wright commented at prizegiving that we would certainly look to keep Halswell on next year’s programme, particularly if the former courses are still not available in 2012.

Tonight it was a true battle of the Orienteers, with a number coming out for the final race.  Once again, New Zealand rep Tane Cambridge took out the long distance race (having won each of the three races in 2011), but also making an appearance were Chris Forne (who was third) and Carsten Joergensen (former series winner and record holder over the previous courses) who was 6th.  Second overall for the men was Sumner’s own Graham Bee.

In the women’s race, Lisa Brignull also made it three from three with her win, with second place going to another local Orienteer, Georgia Whitla.  Sumner’s Megan Macrae was third.

Three new course records were set, which now creates the following records to be pursued in 2012:

  • Senior Men – Tane Cambridge (24.40)
