Carsten Dominates Evans Pass

There was a smaller showing for the last race in The Frontrunner Offroad Series – the Evans Pass Run-over – with 61 runners spread over the short and long distance events.  The timing of the races coincided with the announcement through the media that the Pike River Mine had experienced a second explosion, and that all 29 miners were believed to have died.  We expect that after such an unsettling time over the past few days, many of our usual supporters turned their focus to this most recent announcement.  Our sympathies go out to all those associated with the West Coast’s mining community at such a sad time.

Those who did come along to the final race, enjoyed perfect conditions.  With the Evans Pass Run-over, runners start at sea level and make their way up through the suburb of Sumner/Scarborough, over the tussock covered hill-tops to Evans Pass, before returning via the Captain Thomas Track.  They are rewarded with views of sea, harbour and the hills of Banks Peninsula.  In the shorter distance, runners ascend the Captain Thomas Track, cross over at Evans Pass before returning down the Scarborough Bluffs Track, back across the Evans Pass Road onto the Captain Thomas and home.

More records toppled on Wednesday evening,  with Carsten Jorgenson bettering Rob Howell’s 2005 record (38.06) by 1.21 minutes.  Anthony Rogal also set a new record for the Classic Men, replacing Daniel Reese’s six year old record with a new time of 40.12 minutes (a 1.15 minute improvement).  Annette Campbell now holds the record in the Classic Women’s grade, in a new time of 58.36, taking 2.28 minutes off Jean Cory-Wright’s record set in 2008.  Ella Harris took 4.53 minutes off her own record which she had set in the Girls 10-12 grade in 2009.  Ella now holds a record for each of the three events, and Carsten now holds four records – three races over two different grades.

The Sumner RSA once again was the venue for the Series prizegiving, and there were some excellent spot and place prizes to be had.  The Sumner Running Club sincerely thanks their various sponsors for supporting the 2010 series – The Frontrunner, Bivouac Outdoor, Mizuno, Finns Fudge, and Complete Performance.

In closing, remember that the series will be back again in 2011 – same format, same courses. See you then!
